Reduced Fee Programme

Part of our mission at Alexis Astrology is to help make counselling services and the language of astrology accessible for all those who are committed to their personal development and healing.

Psychological literature indicates that approximately 1 in 7 people in Singapore* (and 1 in 5 Americans) will experience symptoms of a mental health condition each year. However, systemic barriers and social stigmas can prevent many from seeking help, particularly within marginalized communities. Research suggests that culturally, we face unique challenges in accessing mental health services due to cultural stigma, lack of awareness, and socio-economic factors. These will affect those who need help as they:

  1. Have reduced access to mental health services

  2. Are less inclined to seek help for mental health issues

  3. Are less likely to receive the care they require

  4. Are more likely to receive substandard care

  5. Are more prone to discontinuing services early

*2016 Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS), which found that 1 in 7 (about 13.9%) Singaporeans will experience a mental disorder at some point in their lives. This study was conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and is one of the most comprehensive surveys on mental health in Singapore.

These barriers to accessing mental health services are often linked to social stigma, cultural differences, and a lack of culturally sensitive care. In Singapore, mental health care can be further complicated by misconceptions and limited awareness within certain communities. Our clinicians believe that genuine healing can only occur when practitioners commit to addressing these challenges and providing inclusive, culturally competent care. Our reduced fee program is designed to support clients in overcoming these barriers, ensuring greater access to quality mental health services for all.

The Path Forward

In Singapore, the government has been taking active steps to address mental health challenges across the nation. Since 2024, significant developments have been made, with the focus on mental health as an evolving key priority. On February 7, 2024, during a parliamentary motion on advancing mental health, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced a series of major initiatives aimed at improving mental health care. These include expanding services to polyclinics and GP clinics, increasing the number of public sector mental health professionals, and training thousands of frontline workers to identify and assist individuals facing mental health challenges.

Increased funding for mental health services are part of the government’s effort to reduce stigma, improve access to care, and ensure that individuals from all walks of life receive the support they need.

Minister Wong has also spoken about the need for a more inclusive mental health system, one that is sensitive to the diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds of Singaporeans. By advocating for greater community involvement, mental health education, and the training of professionals in cultural competence, the government is working toward making mental health services more accessible and equitable for everyone in Singapore.
